Waycinden Elevated Water Storage Tank

Challenge:

The Illinois American Water Company (IAWC) faced the challenge of replacing an aging and deteriorating standpipe with a more efficient and reliable water storage solution. HR Green was contracted to review the current water system configuration and design a new elevated water storage tank along with necessary accessories. The project also required obtaining and reviewing bids, as well as securing permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), and Cook County. Additionally, HR Green was tasked with managing the bidding process and overseeing construction to ensure the project met all specifications and standards.

Solution:

HR Green designed and oversaw the construction of a new 600,000-gallon spheroid-type elevated water storage tank. Key components of the project included:

• Potable Water Piping Modifications: Adjustments to the existing potable water piping.
• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System Updates: Upgrading the SCADA system.
• New Asphalt Drive: Constructing a new asphalt drive to provide access to the tank.
• Demolition: Safely demolishing the existing tank and removing the piping and pumps within the old booster pump building.

Benefit:

The completion of the Waycinden Elevated Water Storage Tank project provided several significant benefits to IAWC:

• The new tank provided a durable, low-maintenance solution.
• The improvements enhanced the overall efficiency of the water system.
• The elevated water storage tank capacity was increased by 90,000 gallons.
