Del Webb's Sun City

HR Green was hired by the Del Webb Corporation to lead all engineering efforts on their first four-season active adult community, Sun City, located in Huntley, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Del Webb is the premier active adult community developer in the United States, building master-planned, highly amenitized communities for residents of retirement age.

The site consisted of 2,156 acres, with over 5,400 homes located within the community. The development is typical of Del Webb’s Sun City brand and includes two recreation centers encompassing over 100,000 SF, an 18 hole championship Whisper Creek Golf Course, over 600 acres of open space with a fishing lake, the Tall Oaks Tennis Center, the Eakin Fields Softball Complex, the Mill Grove Woodshop, and numerous other lakes and recreational amenities.

HR Green was responsible for the engineering, surveying, and construction staking of all the homesites, as well as, all of the internal collector roads, amenities, parking areas, and the wastewater collection/water distribution system. HR Green was responsible for the overall stormwater management plan for the site and the ambitious realignment and restoration of Eakin Creek which is a branch of the Kishwaukee River. After Pulte Homes purchased Del Webb, HR Green continued in its role of lead engineer, managing all work against some very aggressive schedules and delivering homesite lot engineering for as many as 1,000 units per year. Site challenges included peat soil condition constraints, relocation of the floodplain, and an enormous wetland mitigation project.
