Madison Street and Louise Avenue Expansion for Functionality

The City of Sioux Falls, SD wanted to enhance the appearance and functionality of Madison Street, which accommodates approximately 12,000 vehicles per day.

Madison Street will be reconstructed from Louise Avenue to the Big Sioux River and expanded from three lanes to five lanes west of the river. Louise Avenue will be reconstructed and expanded from two lanes to three lanes from Madison Street to the north 1,500 feet. Work included replacement of water main, upgrading storm sewer, raising railroad, steel casing of water main and storm sewer under the railroad, 9” and 16” PCC pavement, sidewalk, pedestrian trail, traffic signals, pavement markings, street, and pedestrian lighting and landscaping.

This project also included the removal of pavement markings, restriping of pavement markings, and the adjustment of permanent traffic signs along Madison Street from the Big Sioux River to Kiwanis Avenue.  Private utility companies also upgraded their facilities during the project.

This project included the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Big Sioux River.  The two-span, 182’ long, prefabricated steel truss bridge carries a 12’ wide trail.  HR Green developed the Type, Size, and Location (TS&L) plan for the bridge, designed the center pier and integral abutments, and developed the specification for the prefabricated trusses.  The bridge required coordination with the Army Corps of Engineers due to the levees.  Additionally, HR Green worked with MidAmerican Gas to detail supports to suspend a gas main under the deck of the new bridge.
